Robert J. Foster
President & CEO

Robert J. Foster, B.A, M.A. (Economics), CFA, is Founder, President and CEO of Capital Canada, an independent investment banking firm. Mr. Foster focuses on negotiating and structuring mergers, acquisitions and financings. He has a long history of successful transactions, with a particular emphasis on media, sports and entertainment, aviation and real estate. His background includes periods as an analyst, director of research, corporate finance, sales and director of sales.

Mr. Foster currently serves on the board of Intertape Polymer Group, Hunter Amenities, Securcor and Anthem Media Group. In the past he has served on the boards of CHC Helicopters, Golf Town, Cargojet, Canada 3000 and Canadian Airlines Regional in addition to currently serving on a number of private company boards.

Mr. Foster is currently Chair of TO Live, a board appointed by Toronto City Council which is responsible for overseeing the business affairs and operation management of the Toronto Theatres. He serves as Chair of Business for the Arts, an organization which connects arts professionals to business patrons and volunteers across the country. He also serves on the board of the Harbourfront Foundation, the 2020 Canadian Arts Summit steering committee and previously served as the Co-chair of The Mayor’s Task Force- Arts & Theatre, Chair of Toronto Artscape, The National Arts Centre – Ontario Scene and The Toronto Theatres Working Group. In 2011, Mr. Foster was the lead Co-Chair for a year long examination of Toronto’s cultural capacity and priorities, which resulted in the Creative Capital Report for the City of Toronto. This has been embraced by City Council and is a guiding document for the city’s cultural funding and growth moving forward. Robert Foster was named co-recipient of the Rita Davies and Margo Bindhardt Cultural Leader Award. This award is presented biennially to an individual who has demonstrated cultural leadership in the development of arts and culture in Toronto.

Over his lifetime, Robert Foster has generously donated his time, expertise and financial support to more than 30 city and country building initiatives and organizations. He is proud of his wife Julia Foster and four grown children, who all also contribute to the enrichment of our community.

Mr. Foster was born in Vancouver and educated at the University of British Columbia and Queen’s University where he received his B.A. and M.A. (Economics) and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder.

Jack Steckel
Managing Director

Mr. Steckel joined Capital Canada in 2000 after having a relationship with the company since 1997, in which Capital Canada provided financial advisory services for ventures in which Jack was involved. Jack’s previous background concentrated on advertising and marketing services, retail store operations and development, and most recently, technology.

At Capital Canada, Jack has provided financial advisory services for both public and private companies, initiated acquisition opportunities on behalf of clients as well as arranging for equity, mezzanine and debt financing.

Previously, Jack had arranged financing for a takeover of a TSX listed retailer with sales in excess of $100 million.

In the advertising and marketing field, Jack started with JWT, had his own agency which he sold to Grey Advertising and was a senior vice president at Bates and Doner Advertising. During this time clients worked on included Procter & Gamble, Bally Shoes, TD Bank, Sporting Life, Danier, Wendy’s, Speedy Auto Service, Zellers, Blockbuster and Purolator.

In 1997, Mr. Steckel developed the concept of Golf Town, which has become the largest golf products retailer in the world. He has also been instrumental in the development of Pro Hockey Life, a big-box format hockey retailer created from the acquisition of Sports Rousseau.

Blair Milroy
Managing Director

Mr. Milroy joined Capital Canada in the Fall of 2006. Prior to joining Capital Canada, Mr. Milroy worked for a Toronto based institutional equity research and analysis firm. Mr. Milroy leads Capital Canada’s media and technology practice and has extensive experience in the Canadian media industry. Mr. Milroy has a hands-on approach, working closely with CEOs and CFOs in corporate finance and M&A transactions. He has an extensive network of institutional sources of capital and buyers in the private capital markets.

Additionally, Mr. Milroy brings with him several years of experience in financial analysis, equity research and information technology consulting. He has a background in technology application development.

Mr. Milroy has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and is a Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder. Mr. Milroy was previously a member the Board of Directors of iS5 Communications Inc. and the Small and Medium Enterprises Committee of the Ontario Securities Commission.

Colin May

Mr. May joined Capital Canada in 2014. He applies his corporate finance and capital markets knowledge to successfully execute various types of transactions for Capital Canada’s clients, including M&A transactions, equity and debt financings, and valuations. My. May has diverse transaction experience across a range of industries, including aviation, restaurants and retail, real estate, consumer packaged goods, financial services and cannabis.

Prior to joining Capital Canada, Mr. May worked for the Government of Ontario in various accounting and financial management roles. He received his Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies degree from University of Western Ontario, with specialization in Finance, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder.

Daniel Gross

Daniel Gross, CPA, joined Capital Canada in 2017. He is involved in financial modeling and analysis, research, and the preparation of deal documents for financing and M&A transactions across diverse industries. Prior to joining Capital Canada, Daniel spent several years in Deloitte Toronto’s Assurance practice and on special projects in the Consulting business (for high growth tech start-ups), while pursuing his CPA.

Mr. Gross graduated from McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management in 2015 and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) member.

Douglas A. Prothero
Special Advisor, Global Maritime Portfolio

Mr. Prothero has extensive experience as an entrepreneur, largely in the marine and leisure areas. He is currently the CEO and Founder of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, a niche ultra luxury cruise yacht which will offer bespoke voyages on the first of three custom-built yachts in 2020. He has previously founded and owned a number of small and medium enterprises. His career has included significant experience as a professional captain, shipbuilder, ship owner, shipbroker and surveyor.

He has provided consulting services to equity funds, shipping firms, private industry, government agencies/regulators, and lending institutions in the areas of business development, debt and equity financing, industry consolidation and regulatory compliance and reform.

He has served on the boards of a number of industry associations and several charities. Mr. Prothero is currently Chairman of the UK based global youth charity, Sail Training International, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee.

Mr. Prothero was born in Port Stanley, Ontario. He was educated with a specialty in Marine Studies at both the B.A. and M.A. levels (Western Michigan University, University of Maryland and Wilfrid Laurier University). He is a regular conference speaker on subjects related to business development, regulatory compliance and reform, fleet/flag state relations, safety at sea, adventure travel and regional tourism development.
